A USA TODAY BestsellerAn NPR "Book We Love"A finalist for the California Book Award“A poem to mortality and the beauty of how we can cope with it.” -Atul Gawande, author of Being MortalNew York Times-bestselling artist Wendy MacNaughton shares wisdom from hospice caregivers: how to be, when to help, what to say-with full-color drawings throughout. As artist-in-residence at the Zen Hospice Project Guest House in San Francisco, Wendy MacNaughton witnessed firsthand how difficult it is to know what to do when we're sharing final moments with a loved one. In this tenderly illustrated guide to saying goodbye, MacNaughton shows how to make sure those moments are meaningful. Using a framework of “the five things” taught to her by a professional caregiver, How to Say Goodbye provides a model for having conversations of love, respect, and closure: with the words “I forgive you,” “Please forgive me,” “Thank you,” “I love you,” and “Goodbye,” each oriented toward finding mutual peace and understanding when it matters most. With a foreword by renowned physician and author BJ Miller, and practical resources, How to Say Goodbye features MacNaughton's drawn-from-life artwork from both the Zen Hospice Project Guest House and her own aunt's bedside as she died, paired with gentle advice from hospice caregivers on creating a positive sensory experience, acknowledging what you can't control, and sharing memories and gratitude. ''Say Goodbye''By Lisa Gardner (Bantam, 360 pps., $25) Buy at Amazon Reviewed by John Orr July 2008 There are real monsters in this life, and Lisa Gardner writes about some of the worst of them -- child-abusers and sexual predators -- in "Say Goodbye." Spiders are a small theme -- some chapters begin with a bit of arachnology, such as "... venom was used ... to inactivate the prey, which may actually remain alive for four to five days.'' But spiders are used more as a metaphor than as a plot point. The real horrors of this book are crimes committed by human predators who torture, enslave and murder prostitutes -- and young boys. And as the book proceeds, both the arachnology and the crimes we read about become more horrifying. Gardner isn't going for cheap thrills, though. She is writing about an all-too-real problem -- children who disappear from their homes and all to often become the victims of abuse. More than 2,000 children a day are reported missing in the United States, according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. And, says the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, "Child sexual abuse has been reported up to 80,000 times a year, but the number of unreported instances is far greater." In "Say Goodbye," one of Gardner's regular characters, FBI Special Agent Kimberly Quincy, is four months pregnant and wrestling with the issue of parenthood vs. career, with herself, and with her husband, Michael "Mac" McCormack of the...
